In this video, Dayna Lim shares her views on identity issues for autistic teens.
As a child approaches their teenage years, there are pros and cons of them understanding their conditions. Parents can openly share and educate the child about its identity and syndrome that might affect them socially in an adverse way. Understanding their own condition might allow the autistic child to stay away from trouble if they do encounter it.
But some families might not want the child to be treated differently or be discriminated against if they start sharing details about their condition with people they are not close to. The dynamics of the community would be a deciding factor to this issue too.
